Oreimo: My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute Review

Fully titled Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai, literally meaning There’s No Way My Little Sister Can Be This Cute and also known as Ore No Imouto or simply Oreimo (wow that’s a lot of names)- is one of the few popular anime shows that boasts a developing sibling love between brother and sister as its centerpiece, and succeeded phenomenally.

The story follows Kyosuke Kosaka, an average 17-year-old high school student in Chiba who has been living a mundane life in contrast with his beautiful, smart and talented little sister, Kirino. For as long as he can remember, he hasn’t gotten along with his sister well and their relationship has been very distant since. He constantly rants about said frustrations to his childhood friend Manami Tamura.

One time, Kyosuke accidentally bumped into Kirino and then had her personal belongings scatter on the floor. He tried to help her, but Kirino wasn’t very keen in accepting it.

Having no interest in anything anime or 2D, the notion of this DVD being part of his naughty collection was ruled out. Kyosuke now thinks on who among his family members owns this.

In the end, his suspicions were right– it was Kirino. He caught her snooping in his room when he pretended to go outside and buy something at a convenience store. Sneaky but clever!

The little sister denied owning the DVD much to her embarrassment. To save his sister some face, Kyosuke asked her to throw it away for him since no one is claiming ownership f0r it. Pleased with his kind gesture, Kirino asks him what he’d think if she owned that game. Kyosuke responded that no matter what her hobbies are, he won’t make fun of her since it’s really up to her on what hobbies she wants to indulge into.

Gaining confidence with that last statement, Kirino invites him to her room and requested some ‘life counseling’. She would then expose to him her deepest darkest secret: that she’s a hardcore otaku that collects anime merchandise and is a total addict at little sister-themed eroges. It turns out she’s the siscon and not Kyosuke. Plot twist?

Considering her stature on society as a well-respected individual vs. how the world looks down on otaku, she just kept her hobby to herself all this time without telling anyone. The repercussions of her parents and friends learning her secret would be devastating. But hiding it all the time is bad in itself- she needs to let some of the frustration out. This is where Kyosuke comes in- the timing can’t be any more perfect!

He agrees to keep Kirino’s secret between them and from that day on, their relationship as indifferent siblings would now be more like true brother and sister: they hate each other’s guts, yes, but they still help each other out when the other is in trouble. But of course, Kyosuke would be the one giving the helping hand most of the time as he is the elder one.
